By Marcus Moloko

The attempted murder case against alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has officially been transferred to the Johannesburg High Court for trial, following a brief appearance in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

Matlala is accused of orchestrating a hit on his former girlfriend, socialite Tebogo Thobejane, and faces 10 additional attempted murder charges involving prominent individuals.

Matlala stood in the dock alongside four co-accused, including his wife, Tsakani Matlala.

The group faces charges related to a failed assassination attempt on Thobejane, which prosecutors allege was part of a broader pattern of targeted violence linked to Matlala’s alleged criminal network.

Among the other alleged victims are taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and DJ Seunkie Mokubung, popularly known as DJ Wetties.

Prosecutors confirmed in court that Matlala’s case was ready for transfer to the High Court, where he will stand trial for the full slate of charges.

Immediately following Matlala’s appearance, another alleged crime boss, Katiso “KT”
Molefe appeared before the same magistrate’s court.

Molefe has also been implicated in multiple murder cases and, lile Matlala, is a recurring figure in testimony at the ongoing Madlanga Commission, which is investigating corruption and interference in South Africa’s criminal justice system.

On Tuesday, prosecutors told the court that Molefe’s case was not yet ready for transfer to the High Court.

Molefe was granted R400,000 bail by the Johannesburg High Court in October.

Both Matlala and Molefe have been linked to broader criminal syndicates operating in Gauteng, with ties to the taxi industry, entertainment sector, and alleged networks of hired hitmen.

INSIDE POLITICS
