South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie said on Saturday, weeks after the player represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25,” McKenzie said in a statement.

The South African Football Players Union also confirmed Adams’s death, describing him as a gifted player and “a proud servant of the game” whose life and career had been cut short.

President Cyril Ramaphosa also said on Saturday that he was mourning Adams alongside former South African Rugby Under-18 prop Luqobo Makwedini, who died at the age of 20.

“It is particularly tragic that we are suffering the loss of two outstanding, young athletes at a time when our nation continues to immerse itself in the FIFA World Cup tournament, as well as the Springboks’ and Springbok Women’s matches against Scotland and the USA Eagles in Pretoria today,” Ramaphosa said.

Born in Komga in the Eastern Cape, Makwedini’s talent on the field earned him a
scholarship to Wynberg Boys’ High School in Cape Town, where his performances in
the front row earned him national recognition at Under-18 level.

He went on to sign a three-year contract with Béziers, and was on the cusp of realising his dream of professional senior rugby ahead of the club’s 2026/27 Pro D2 campaign. It has been reported that he died after a training session with Béziers.

Said McKenzie of Makwedini: “Luqobo represented South Africa with distinction, and his passing is a loss not only to his loved ones but to South African rugby as a whole. May his family find strength and comfort, and may his memory continue to inspire the young players who will follow in his footsteps.”

Despite speculation that Adams may have committed suicide, McKenzie said the cause of his death had not been established.

He appealing to the media and public to avoid speculation while his family and club were given privacy to mourn.

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation,” McKenzie said.

He said any official information would be communicated by the appropriate parties.

Adams began his career at Stellenbosch FC, progressing through the club’s academy before becoming its first academy graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020.

He made 139 appearances for Stellenbosch and helped the Cape Winelands club win the 2023 Carling Knockout before joining South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, according to the minister’s statement.

McKenzie said Adams later added a domestic Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his honours during his time with the Pretoria club.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” McKenzie said.

Adams was part of the South African squad that claimed bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire in 2024 and was selected by coach Hugo Broos for the 2026 World Cup.

He appeared in all three of South Africa’s group matches as Bafana Bafana reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. He was an unused substitute when South Africa were eliminated by co-hosts Canada in the round of 32.

Adams played against Czechia in Atlanta shortly after learning that his grandmother, Marianna Adams, had died hours before the match.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has dismissed reports that Hugo Broos has stepped down as head coach of the senior men’s national team, insisting the Belgian remains in charge of Bafana Bafana.

SAFA said Broos is currently at his home in Belgium following South Africa’s FIFA World Cup campaign and is expected to return to South Africa later this month.

The association was responding to widespread reports on Thursday claiming the 74-year-old had decided to retire from coaching after ending his five-year tenure with Bafana Bafana.

The reports followed comments Broos reportedly made during an interview in Belgium, in which he described his decision to stop coaching as “irreversible”.

He was also quoted as saying he could remain involved in football in an advisory or scouting role and planned to return to South Africa later this month to bid farewell.

However, SAFA dismissed the reports.

“Broos remains the head coach of Bafana Bafana and reports claiming the contrary are completely false,” the association said.

“It is not the first time that the Belgian mentor has been linked with an exit shortly after the South African senior men’s national team has performed well at an international tournament.”

SAFA recalled that in March 2024, Broos was linked with the Tunisia national team just weeks after guiding Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

The association said Broos had only recently returned from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he led South Africa to its best-ever performance at the global showpiece.

Broos returned to South Africa with the squad earlier this month before travelling to Belgium for a short break.

“The coach is currently at home in Belgium and will return to South Africa later this month,” SAFA said.

The latest speculation follows weeks of uncertainty over Broos’ future. Before the World Cup, he repeatedly indicated the tournament would mark the end of his coaching career.

However, after Bafana Bafana’s historic run to the last 32, Broos said he would take time before making a final decision, while SAFA president Danny Jordaan indicated discussions would be held on the coach’s future.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said he was proud of the progress his team made at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the tournament as an important step in South Africa’s football journey after the national team returned home to a hero’s welcome on Thursday morning.

The team arrived at O.R. Tambo International Airport, where hundreds of jubilant supporters, government officials and Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie gathered to welcome the squad.

South Africa’s campaign ended in the Round of 32 after defeat to Canada, but Bafana still made history by reaching the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup for the first time.

Speaking during a media briefing, Broos said the team had every reason to be satisfied with its performances.

“The first game overwhelmed us. We realised it was not just a game but something special with more than 80 000 people there to watch,” Broos said.

“We were not so bad defensively, but after winning the ball it was a disaster. After that first game we sat down with the players, showed them what was wrong and what was good, and told them to forget the bad but learn from it. From then on we played well. We are happy and satisfied with our performances because it was not easy. Now we have to look to the future, improve and achieve even better results.”

The opening match, a 2-0 defeat to Mexico, proved to be a harsh introduction to the level and intensity of the tournament. But Bafana recovered from that setback to keep their campaign alive and eventually progress beyond the group stage.

Captain Ronwen Williams said the opening match served as a valuable learning experience for the squad.

“The first game, the hype and the pressure were a bit too much,” Williams admitted.

“We have an experienced coach. He left us alone for two days and we only had recovery training. On the Monday we looked at where we could improve and recover from the first game.”

Williams said studying other World Cup matches helped the players better understand the level of competition.

“We started watching other matches as well. We saw the level of the games, the mistakes that teams were making and what we needed to fix. It was a good wake-up call, but it also showed that we can compete and we can play.”

The Bafana captain also praised winger Thapelo Maseko, who impressed during the tournament.

“Going into the tournament we knew we had a weapon in him because he looked powerful and strong. I’m just happy that he is in a good space. Wherever his future is, I hope he can perform and be happy. We are proud of him and will continue supporting him.”

Williams said the tournament highlighted the bright future of South African football.

“The team has been on a positive path. All the young guys in South Africa are very talented. We must thank the coach for trusting them and allowing them to play at the World Cup. I’m proud of them. The mentality they have at such a young age is incredible.”

Ramaphosa also revealed that he had spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney ahead of the match, joking that while the two leaders enjoy strong bilateral relations, there would be no diplomatic compromise once the football began.

The multi-agency raid, led by City of Tshwane Executive Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya in partnership with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) customs unit, forms part of the municipality’s aggressive “Reclaim our city” strategy targeting illicit trade, hijacked infrastructure, and unlicensed businesses across Pretoria.

Shops in Marabastad were raided, with dozens of unregistered salons and trading outlets on Madiba Street shut down for lacking valid municipal licences.

Mayor Moya said the counterfeit trade was undermining the local economy and robbing consumers of quality products.

“We know that this T-shirt goes for R1,600 at legitimate retail shops. Here in Marabastad, we see many shops selling it illegally. Of course, this is illicit trading. We are not alone -with the TMPD and SARS Customs, we said the nonsense happening at Marabastad would be clamped down. This thing is drowning the economy. If people can buy fake stuff, it means genuine products cannot be bought. Residents of Tshwane must be aware,” she warned.

The clampdown comes amid growing national tension over undocumented foreign nationals, with activist groups preparing for intensified protest action on Tuesday, 30 June.

South Africa have just one point from two games and realistically need a victory to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages, either as runners-up or among the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

What makes the task even more daunting is the absence of midfield talisman Teboho Mokoena.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star rescued Bafana against Czechia with a late penalty that earned a priceless point, but his second yellow card in two matches triggered a suspension that rules him out of Thursday’s decider.

Their persistence paid off in the 83rd minute when midfielder Teboho Mokoena converted a penalty after Pavel Sulc was penalised for handball, rescuing a point for Bafana and sparking celebrations among South African supporters.

This evening, at 6pm SA time, Bafana Bafana play their 11th and arguably most important match at the World Cup finals when they face Czechia.

Anything less than a victory will leave their tournament hanging by a thread and could turn their remaining match against South Korea, in the early hours of next Thursday, into little more than an academic exercise.

The first and most obvious reason Bafana can and must win is that, in Czechia, they meet the weakest opponent in the group — and not only because Czechia are ranked 40th in the world to Bafana’s 60th.

Czechia needed two penalty shootout victories in the European playoffs to qualify. They remain lethargic and unconvincing, lacking players of technical ability and relying heavily on set-pieces, including long throw-ins in the final third, to create meaningful chances.

Their only goal so far came in their 2-1 loss to South Korea, after they had taken the lead.

Coach Hugo Broos has to resolve both formation and personnel issues for tonight’s game, starting with who replaces Sphephelo Sithole as the midfield anchor after he gave away the opening goal and was sent off against Mexico.

Captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams played the ball as he does every week at Mamelodi Sundowns, but Bafana forgot that he is not surrounded by technically accomplished club teammates who are comfortable playing from the back.

It looks like Sithole will be replaced by Thalente Mbatha, a defensive midfielder of limited abilities who can sometimes look lost in midfield for his club, Orlando Pirates, but recovers well enough to get the job done.

The two players Broos must start are Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng on the flanks, supporting Iqraam Rayners — not Lyle Foster — up front.

The Czechs will have studied Foster closely from his time in the English Premier League, and he looks drained by Burnley’s relegation campaign. Mofokeng will struggle against Czechia’s physicality, but he can still hurt them if protected by the referee and properly supported by his teammates.

Teboho Mokoena and Jayden Adams must be given another opportunity to drive the team creatively. Bafana’s defence will have to be at its best in aerial challenges, which will place a heavy responsibility on Williams and Ime Okon.

Bafana must play on the front foot in a more attacking formation, or Broos risks wiping out much of the goodwill earned by his achievements, including qualifying South Africa on merit for the World Cup for the first time since 2002.

The second and more compelling reason Bafana must win tonight is that they are unlikely to get anything from the game against South Korea. They will struggle to cope with South Korea’s pace and technical ability.

The best way to approach South Korea would be to play with a low block and a double pivot in midfield to shut the back door.

That would leave room for one creative player, who would then need to be assisted by the wingers — again, probably Appollis and Mofokeng. Tshepang Moremi could also help connect defence with attack, with the line led by Rayners or a reinstated and rested Foster, and later Evidence Makgopa.

When this World Cup concludes, South Africa must hold an inquest into how two Asian nations, South Korea and Japan, have grown into football powers over the 34 years since South Africa were readmitted to international football in 1992, and the 30 years since South Africa were crowned African champions in 1996.

Japan’s J.League was launched soon after South Africa’s readmission to FIFA, at a time when South Africa already had a strong established local league.

Both Japan and South Korea play in a confederation where they travel vast distances to face opposition of uneven quality, including smaller football nations such as the Maldives. Yet they have built systems that consistently produce technically accomplished, disciplined and tactically intelligent players.

Japan have beaten Brazil and England over the past year and have drawn with the Netherlands at this World Cup. Both Japan and South Korea are expected to qualify for the knockout stages, with South Korea likely to do so at South Africa’s expense — or possibly even as group winners ahead of co-hosts Mexico if they draw with or beat them at 3am tomorrow morning.

China, with a population of more than a billion and years of investment in its own Super League, has still not got it right in the way Japan and South Korea have.

Their secret is a willingness to admit their own limitations and invest in developing players — two things South African football has too often been unwilling to do.
