Transport Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa and Gauteng acting premier Lebogang Maile conducted a road safety campaign at the Grasmere toll plaza on N1 on Friday.

Hlengwa warned road users not to use their cellphones while driving.

“We’ve got a dilemma of the content creators and the influencers… use of cellphones behind the steering wheel. There is a lapse of five seconds per every cellphone interaction that you have on the road and the response time is diminished and therefore you are at risk, ” Hlengwa told reporters.

The campaign was supported by a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation.

Hlengwa also said that one of the main causes of accidents on the road was drinking and driving.

“We’ve got over R200,000 worth of fines that have been issued, 10 vehicles have been discontinued and one case of drunk and driving,” Hlengwa said.

The deputy minister also expressed his concern over people who violated the signs of the road, and urged motorists to exercise caution and patience.

Traffic volumes dramatically increased on Friday, with people headed to various holiday destinations.
