Deputy President David Mabuza has declined to answer questions related to the SA Revenue Services ‘rogue unit’ ongoing sagas, saying the matter was before the courts.
Mabuza was responding to an oral question in the National Assembly by EFF’s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.
The party also wanted from the deputy president if he intended to fast track any legislation of the Government through Parliament that is currently in the legislative pipeline which will regulate the establishment of intelligence services in government departments and state-owned entities, where such services are not of the SA National Defense Force (SANDF) or the SA Police Service (SAPS).
Mabuza said the matter was before the court of law and as such it would be premature for him to speak on the matter in full.
“As you know, the matter is before the court and I cannot respond to question whether that unit was correctly established or not correctly established. It would be premature to speak about the matter that is before the law,’ said Mabuza.
The SARS rogue unit was allegedly established by former SARS commissioner and current public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan.
This week, Gordhan challenged the findings of the Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane which found that the establishment of the SARS unit was in violation of the country’s intelligence legislation.
Mkhwebane has ordered President Cyril Ramaphosa to take appropriate action against the minister.
Gordhan is currently challenging Mkhwebane’s report in the Pretoria High Court.
At the weekend, former SARS commissioner Tom Moyane weighed in on the SARS unit debacle, which he said several investigators found to be established illegally and that it performed illegal activities.
