A fire destroyed nearly 200 shacks and left some 900 people homeless in the Pomona informal settlement in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg Monday night.
Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson Aaron Mafunda said no deaths have been reported despite the extent of the blaze.
“We managed to extinguish the fire and there were no casualties.”
Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Mzwandile Masina, who visited the scene, said the City has allocated three community halls in the area to house displaced citizens.
A Joint Operations Committee has been setup to provide humanitarian support in the area.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
The NG Church Bonaero Park on Malpensa Street is being used as a drop-off point for clothes, blankets, food, water and other necessities.
