Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has hailed Durban City Football Club for making sporting history after clinching the 2026 Nedbank Cup title, ending a 17-year wait for a KwaZulu-Natal team to lift the trophy.

Speaking during a gala dinner held last weekend alongside KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula and other dignitaries, Ntuli described the club’s achievement as a proud moment for the province.

The premier said Durban City FC’s victory over TS Galaxy in last week’s final marked a defining moment not only for the club but for KwaZulu-Natal as a whole.

“Last Saturday, Durban City Football Club achieved what no team from our province has accomplished in 17 years, lifting the prestigious Nedbank Cup since this iconic competition was launched,” Ntuli said.

He praised the club’s determination and talent, saying the province had waited and hoped for such a moment.

Ntuli also commended the coaching staff led by head coach Pitso Dladla, as well as the players, management and owners for their contribution to the success.

“Their success has once again demonstrated that KwaZulu-Natal is a true province of winners,” he said.

“From outstanding matric results to this latest sporting milestone, the province continues to distinguish itself as a centre of excellence, achievement and limitless potential.”

Ntuli said Durban City FC’s victory belonged to all residents of KwaZulu-Natal, adding that the club had helped elevate the profile of football in the province.

“This victory belongs not only to the players, the technical team and the management of Durban City FC, but also to every resident of KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.

He added that sport continued to play a vital role in promoting social cohesion, inspiring young people and contributing to economic growth.

“As the rural government of unity, we always emphasise the importance of sports in forging social cohesion and unity. Durban City’s victory against TS Galaxy united football lovers across colour, culture and religion,” Ntuli said.
