MINISTER of Employment and Labour Nxesi has become the second member of cabinet to be hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19 last week.

“The Minister of Employment and Labour, Mr Thembelani ‘Thulas’ Nxesi (MP), was admitted to hospital last night due to Covid-19. The Minister tested positive for the coronavirus almost a week ago and has, until last night, been in self-quarantine at home,” Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams said in a statement.

“His admission to hospital comes on the advice of his medical doctors, in order for him to have access to better medical attention and proper monitoring.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe has also been hospitalized after he and his wife Nolwandle tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

The presidency in a statement announced that the minister was taken to hospital after the family doctor suggested that he needed close medical attention and monitoring.

Mantashe tested positive after testing three times since the virus started in South Africa.

His wife, Nolwandle will, however, continue self-isolating.

The Presidency said the government was confident that the Mantashe’s and Nxesi will beat the deadly virus and has wished both families well.
