Chris Hani’s widow, Limpho, lashes out at Chief Justice Zondo, claims unfair treatment

CHRIS Hani’s widow, Limpho Hani, said on Monday that former ANC leader Oliver Tambo must have been turning in his grave the day Janusz Waluś, the man who killed her husband, was granted parole.

She was speaking at the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the assassination of the former SA Communist Part (SACP) leader in Ekurhuleni.

Hani was gunned down on his driveway by Walus, an anti-Communist Polish refugee affiliated with the neo-Nazi militia Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), on April 10, 1993.

Walus was released from prison last year under very strict parole conditions.

“Tambo turned in his grave the day [Judge Raymond] Zondo released Hani’s killer from prison,” said Hani.

She said she did not receive any letter from Walus, the man convicted of her husband’s murder, or Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

‘I have not been treated fairly,” Hani told guests.

Hani also expressed her disappointment with the government’s lack of interest in following up on the cases presented to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

“Decisions were made and given to the government, but they were never implemented to date. I have not been treated fairly,” she said.

She also commented on the ruling of the Constitutional Court which ordered the parole release of Waluś, on 21 November last year.

Hani previously described the judgment as “diabolical” and criticised the judges involved the ruling.

She slammed Zondo, saying the Chief Justice “did not care” about her loss as a victim.

“I still say what is diabolical is diabolical.”

She further said the Constitutional Court’s ruling had “re-traumatised” her.

“I have first-hand experience. We sat in court and were blamed and shamed as a letter from my husband’s killer was read out. The judge was pertinent that this letter, which I never received, should have been responded to positively be me. I have never ever received a letter from Waluś and neither from the Chief Justice.”

“I don’t know what letter they were talking about, however, the judgment or the reason Waluś was given parole was because Chief Justice Zondo felt that I didn’t answer the “baas‘s” letter. Remember Waluś is white. I am a black woman with no husband so now I can be bullied. My sin was that I did not respond a letter that I never received.”

She stated that Zondo “did not care” about her loss.

“I hope maybe some of you might have received the letter [and]; if you did, will you please pass me the copy then I can respond to the famous letter. According to the court, this killer was suddenly a nice fellow who is owed a privilege of being released much early from his life sentence,” Hani said, reiterating that her earlier views that the judgement was “diabolical”.

“I still say what is diabolical is diabolical,” said Hani.

She used the occasion to slam the TRC, which was chaired by the late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

“Then you had the TRC, which in my view was a waste of taxpayers’ money. Decisions were made and given to government. They were never implemented to date,” she added.
