CHRIS Matlhako, a member of the SACP’s Central Committee and head of the Secretary for International Relations, has passed away.

Matlhako passed away on Thursday morning, 20 April 2023.

Matlhako was a full-time member of the SACP’s Central Committee, elected at the SACP 15th National Congress held from 13 to 16 July 2022. In this role, he served as Secretary for International Relations at the Party’s headquarters in Johannesburg.

He previously served as the SACP’s 2nd Deputy General Secretary, elected at the 14th National Congress in 2017, and as a Central Committee member before that.

He was also a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and played an active role in the mass democratic movement as an activist and leader.

“Comrade Chris Matlhako joined the South African liberation struggle as a student, actively participating in the student movement to fight against the apartheid system. He later joined the SACP and remained committed to the socialist cause,” the SACP’s Dr Alex MAshilo said on Thursday.

“Comrade Chris was an astute intellectual who dedicated himself fully to the socialist cause. He authored many articles on various subjects concerning the revolution for local and international publications. A collection of his articles published in various publications over the years was made available and serialized in the magazine Thinking Che, with the first volume appearing in 2019.”
