THE Section 194 Enquiry Committee, responsible for assessing the suitability of Public Protector (PP) Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane to remain in office, is expected to resume its hearings on Wednesday.
Committee Chairperson Qubudile Dyantyi confirmed on Tuesday that despite the initial plan to convene on Monday, he granted Advocate Mkhwebane additional time to instruct her legal team.
This decision was made to ensure the hearings proceed in a thorough and diligent manner.
Dyantyi explained that numerous letters were exchanged among the involved parties, including the Office of the Public Protector South Africa, Seanego Attorneys, Advocate Mkhwebane, and the committee, following their previous meeting.
These correspondences will be presented to the committee during the session on Wednesday.
However, Mkhwebane told Inside Politics that she will be attending the hearings on Wednesday,
“I will be attending the hearing tomorrow. I am still not getting assistance from the Office of the Public Protector South Africa in approaching my attorney. We will see how things pan out,” she said.
Established on 16 March 2021, the committee’s purpose is to conduct a constitutional inquiry into the fitness of the Public Protector to hold office.
It is anticipated that the committee’s work will be concluded by the end of May 2023.
