ANC veteran and former SABC managing director of news and current affairs Snuki Zikalala was on Saturday elected unopposed as the president of the ANC Veterans’ League at an elective conference held in Boksburg, Gauteng over the weekend.
The 72-year-old Zikalala was unopposed after another ANC stalwart – former Home Affairs department director-general and former ANC treasurer-general Mavuso Msimang – declined nomination for the top post.
However, the 81-year-old Msimang was elected unopposed and accepted the post of the Veteran’s League deputy presidency. Connie September (64), a former administrator during President Jacob Zuma’s presidency, was also elected unopposed as the deputy secretary-general.
In his opening address at the conference on Friday Zikalala echoed sentiments expressed earlier by the ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula that the party is planning an ‘outright majority’ and not interested in forming coalitions with other parties, especially with the EFF.
“We share no values with the EFF, their primary role is to oppose the ANC and we fish from the same pond, we don’t agree with them, their principles, traditions and they don’t mean good for the country,” Zikalala said.
The Veteran’s League nomination conference follows almost a month after the ANC Youth League conference where Collen Malatjie was elected unopposed as a leader.
Last week’s ANC Women’s League conference which nominated Minister in the Presidency Sisisi Tolashe as its president, beating to the post, former incumbent and former Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini by a huge majority.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver closing remarks at the conference on Sunday.
