Rap artist and TV personality Molemo “Jub-Jub” Maarohanye’s case for rape, attempted murder and assault was postponed to December 11 at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Maarohanye’s defence team tried to have the matter postponed to a later date, arguing that the rapper has performances lined up for the festive season but Magistrate Betty Khumalo dismissed their submission.

The drama started after the request for a postponement was made to allow the NPA time to consult witnesses about additional information requested by the Uyajola 9/9 presenter’s defence.

His attorney Ntsako Baloyi told the court that the team has requested further particulars from the state and proceeded to make further arrangements as to when it will comply with our request.

“So if the court will be amenable, we’ve agreed on certain dates which are subject to the court’s approval and the state has indicated they need to consult the witnesses as far as the gathering of the particulars we are requesting”.

However, Khumalo would have none of it.

“So why when you addressed (the court), you gave me that date? Are you telling me you have not yet consulted with your client? Because now I have made an order and I’m not inclined to change that order.

“If your client is not available, a warrant of arrest will be authorised. So the date stands, sir, 11 December. You are warned,” Khumalo told the defence team.

Maarohanye faces 13 charges including multiple counts of rape, indecent assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and several counts of kidnapping, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

He is out on R10,000 bail. The alleged offences were committed during 2006 and 2009.
