ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has dispatched one of the biggest NEC delegations to the SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) national elective conference starting on Friday in Durban.
Joining President Cyril Ramaphosa to the elective conference are the governing party’s national chair Gwede Mantashe, Deputy SG Nomvula Mokonyane and Treasurer-General Gwen Ramokgopa.
The ANC delegation will be officially welcomed by Sanco KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Jacob Zuma, who is said to be eyeing the top position of becoming Sanco president.
Zuma was elected in absentia on Sunday, having been previously elected to the position earlier this year in a disputed provincial election.
This resulted in the former president and others steering an interim structure following the disbandment of the organisation’s provincial leadership structure.
At the weekend Sanco, resolved its differences, electing Zuma as chairperson, Lawrence Dube as his deputy, Sizwe Cele as provincial secretary, Lucky Hadebe as deputy provincial secretary, Sabatha Mzimela as provincial treasurer and Mduduzi Hlatshwayo as provincial organiser.
Mbalula said the Sanco national conference was vitally important in laying the foundation for building a strong, united and vibrant progressive civic movement that can contribute to strengthening and renewing the alliance.
Reports have emerged that the unusually massive ANC NEC delegation to the gathering is meant to stop Zuma from emerging at all costs.
Ramaphosa is expected to address the congress on Friday afternoon while the election of new Sanco national leaders is scheduled to take place in the evening.
