THE chief of the army General Rudzani Maphwanya has denied allegations of the existence of a “so-called torture squad” in the SANDF following a four-part series published in Open Secrets implicating Special Forces Brigade, Military Police, Defence Intelligence and Defence Legals services of conducting criminal activities including assassinations and torture.
“There are no military squads in SANDF that exist to carry out acts of torture and murder for whatever reasons.
“The SANDF stands for the defence and the protection of the people and will always act within the confines of the law and the constitution,” he said Maphwanya in a media briefing on Thursday.
Open Secrets, which published a four-part expose, implicates the units in two cases where rifles were stolen from the SA Army Engineer Formation, Tek Base in Lyttelton in December 2019.
Among issues raised by the organisation are the disappearance of alleged Islamic State (IS)
