THE MK broke its silence on the participation of 58 members who missed the swearing in ceremony on Friday leading to fears that the party has boycotted the National Assembly, by confirming that the party would be part of the opposition in Parliament after all.
On Sunday, Zuma addressed the media as President of MK Party and announced that his party will be occupying opposition benches in Parliament together with what he called progressive caucus made up of EFF, UDM, ATM, PAC and Aljamah.
Zuma sat quietly at first next to the MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhela saying he had the flu, but later spoke about the history of the ANC and the decisions that were taken when a GNU was formed in 1994.
He questioned the announcement made by President Cyril Ramaphosa on the formation of the current GNU and called it “misleading”.
Zuma said back in 1994, a GNU was necessitated by the need to foster national unity given the violence that followed the negotiations for the birth of a new democratic state from the Apartheid regime.
By announcing a new form of Government of National Unity, Zuma said President Ramaphosa wanted a way to justify an “unholy alliance” with the DA.
“The Government of National Unity is fake and meaningless. The DA and ANC just want to be together, for various reasons of their own,” he said.

Zuma also slammed the media for saying there is a GNU, adding that there is no such a thing and what is in place is an “unholy alliance” between the ANC and the DA.
“We need to educate our people that there is no Government of National Unity in South Africa. There is a white-led unholy alliance between the DA and the ANC of Ramaphosa. It is sponsored by big business. It is for the benefit of the markets, not the people.
“It must be crushed before it finds its feet,” the statement read by Ndhlela said.
Zuma’s media briefing comes after the declaration of an agreement signed by the ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula and DA Federal Chairperson Helen Zille to enter into a government.
In the agreement, the two parties agreed to vote together in Parliament for the position of Speaker, Deputy Speaker and President. The two parties further agreed to form a government together which will be led by President Ramaphosa.
