Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has commended law enforcement agencies in ensuring the country is protected from potential harm emanating from illegal and unauthorised training camps.

Mchunu said on Sunday that the investigative and policing response in the recent bust at a farm in Modimolle, Limpopo was a welcome step in the right direction for the country.

“The swift and coordinated response by these specialised units showcases the commitment and diligence of our law enforcement agencies in protecting our communities from potential threats,” Mchunu said.

Last week, the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, alongside State Security, the Public Order Police (POP), Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Modimolle Vispol, conducted a raid on an alleged firearm training facility.

The minister confirmed that the raid uncovered several licensed rifles, a pistol and undisclosed amount of ammunition which are believed to have been used in the training activities at the facility.

Mchunu said that while no arrests have been made so far, the authorities were leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.

He said the safety and security of South African citizens is of the utmost importance to his department and that investigations into the matter will continue with the full support of all relevant law enforcement agencies.

Despite the ongoing investigation into the military-related training equipment found at the farm, communities are still concerned about their safety with many expressing concern over the recent rise in military training camps.

This forms the second bust of security training irregularities, following the uncovering of 95 Libyan nationals at a farm outside White River in Mpumalanga.
