The Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has called on Premier Panyaza Lesufi and provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni to act swiftly following the assault on crime prevention wardens.
A video has been circulating on social media showing community members in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni, attacking Gauteng crime prevention wardens.
“This unjustifiable attack on law enforcement officials who serve to protect communities is not only a crime against individuals involved, but also a direct assault to the rule of law and undermines the safety and security of all citizens,” committee chairperson Bandile Masuku said on Tuesday.
“The committee stands firmly in support of Gauteng crime prevention wardens who risk their lives daily to maintain peace and order in the Province and believes that any form of violence against them must be met with the full might of the law.”
Masuki urged the public to cooperate with the wardens and other law enforcement officers in the rooting out criminal elements within their communities.
The wardens who are recognised as equal to provincial traffic officers, were introduced by Lesufi over a year ago.
He said in July that the number of wardens would be increased from 7000 to 15,000.
