THE ANC has cancelled the party’s anniversary celebrations scheduled for the first week of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The annual commemorations celebrate the party’s anniversary.
ANC secretary general Ace Magashule said the party’s President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver a virtual January 8 statement.
“The prognosis paints a worrying picture and all indications are that the virus will escalate in terms of the rate of infections in all provinces, other than the Northern Cape,” said Magashule.
“The Officials were unanimous that it was untimely to forge ahead with the celebration in view of the aggressive nature of the pandemic. We are of the view that we have to uphold measures that are prescribed to minimize the spread and impact of this pandemic.”
The party says it has met with Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize, who indicated the rate of infections in all provinces would have increased by January.
The ANC said it would have been inappropriate to forge ahead with the 109th anniversary celebrations.
The party said it has decided to uphold prescribed measures to minimise the spread and impact of the coronavirus.
