Today, 26 September, marks the birthday of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, a trailblazing anti-apartheid activist and pivotal figure in South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

Both the Economic Freedom Fighters and the African National Congress commemorated her legacy, recognising her unwavering dedication to the emancipation of Africans.

EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys said that “unlike many who were quick to betray the cause for personal gain, Mama Winnie stood firm until her last breath, even as she was isolated and persecuted by the very forces she fought alongside”.

As a social worker and activist, Madikizela-Mandela confronted the brutal regime, facing harassment, banning and imprisonment. Her leadership and militancy inspired a generation, earning her the nickname “Mother of the Nation”.

“Mama Winnie’s legacy is one of the relentless defiance. She did not compromise on the land question, the economic liberation of our people or the dream of a truly equal South Africa,” Mathys said in statement.

The EFF seized the moment to address its continued displeasure with the “ANC and DA political marriage”, characterising it as a betrayal of Madikizela-Mandela and all that she dedicated her life fighting for.

In a mini tribute on X, the ANC noted Madikizela-Mandela’s courage and acts of valour during the days of apartheid.

“Her immense personal sacrifice remains a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative power of steadfast dedication to the cause of liberation,” it said.

“… let us draw inspiration from her example and redouble our efforts to address the challenges that remain in our quest for a more just and inclusive South Africa”, the party said.
