Unconfirmed reports from KwaZulu-Natal suggest that the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) has resolved to recall embattled eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede.
New channel eNCA reported that Gumede’s axing was confirmed with “three independent and reliable sources” who attended the two-day special PEC meeting in Durban.
Gumede, who is facing fraud and corruption charges relating to a R208-million waste tender, has reportedly been axed together with the speaker and party chief whip in the Metro.
She is currently out on R50,000 bail and is due back in court in January next year.
The ANC placed Gumede on 30-day special leave in June, which had since been extended twice after the PEC failed to reach consensus by the first lapsed date.
ANC KZN provincial spokesperson Ricardo Mthembu said a media briefing will be held on Tuesday to announce the PEC decision.
