ANC Gauteng’s Provincial Integrity Committee (PIC) has cleared City of Joburg mayor Geoff Makhubo of all allegations of impropriety and conflict of interest following reports that he scored R30 million by acting as an influence broker between the metro and Regiments Fund Managers.

This is according to provincial secretary Jacob Khawe on Sunday, who was speaking at a media briefing on the committee’s findings on Sunday at the Ruth First House in Rosebank, north of Johannesburg.

Khawe added that the PIC recommended that the former West Rand District Municipality and Communication Portfolio Committee Chairperson Boyce Maneli must step down and resign from parliament.

Under Maneli’s watch, West Rand District Municipality illegally invested R77 million with VBS Mutually Bank and was forced to stop multiple projects such as the Construction of Roads and Maintenance Project and the Droogehheuwel Bulk Water Supply Programme.

Maphefo Letsie, the mayor of Merafong and the current chairperson of the ANC in the West Rand Region, was also asked to step down.

The Merafong Municipality illegally invested R55 million with VBS under the watch of Letsie.

The money that was invested was from conditional grants which were meant for infrastructure, water service infrastructure and housing as confirmed by COGTA to Parliament.
