With loud music, bright colours and a hefty police presence, both supporters and organisers from the ANC have made their way to the rally which will kick off the ruling-party’s planned review throughout the country.
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver an address at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto this Sunday, commencing the start of the party’s 2019 Manifesto Review Programme.
The ruling party is expected to report back to communities on what it has achieved in the implementation of its 2019 election manifesto.
Further roll out of report back sessions will be extended throughout the month of September with KZN’s scheduled session yet to be determined.
The review rally concluded a weekend long preliminary process that started on Friday.
ANC SG Fikile Mbalula, among other top party leaders, have been in preparation for the review since earlier this week.
“We felt it important to report back to the people about the performance of the ANC. We have not completed the term, but at the same time, we want to say what are the outstanding things and what are the obstacles we have to tackle going forward,” Mbalula said.
Mbalula further said that the review was aimed at achieving several objectives, namely a demonstration of the ANC’s commitment to addressing its challenges and recognising its shortcoming, rebuilding the trust between the party and society, and addressing the issues of service delivery and job creation.
President Ramaphosa has previously admitted to what he considered ‘blemishes’ on the party’s record.
Speaking on Saturday during an engagement with senior political journalists and editors at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, Ramaphosa mentioned the PPE-related scandals, the handling of the 2021 July unrest as well as the state incapacity to adequately deal with the flood which occurred in KZN and Eastern Cape; as three of the most regrettable of the ANC’s recent mistakes.
