The ANC’s acting spokesperson Dakota Lekgoete confirms that the party’s candidate list is finalised and will be submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Wednesday afternoon.
Lekgoete is responding to the public outcry that the names of Malusi Gigaba, Bathabile Dlamini, Nomvula Mokonyane and Thabang Makwetla have made the cut for the party’s list.
He says the ANC has made sure that the nominations of these candidates are in line with the Election Act, adding that none of the candidates have been found guilty by any court of law.
In the case of all the comrades who are on our list, we made sure that we comply with the Election Act in that none of the candidates must have a criminal record, and must not be endorsed by an institution of mental health.— Dakota Lekgoete, Acting spokesperson – ANC
“So far there is no adverse findings by any competent court of law except in the court of public opinion.”

And the public will have an opportunity to raise any concerns, he says.
“As soon as the IEC publishes the final list, it automatically allows members of the public to make objections.”

“We did not find anything wrong. Even the legal briefing we got is that we can’t punish people who have matters pending against them or are implicated in commissions, because those commissions have not given the right of reply or allowed any cross-examinations and there are no findings of the commission.”
— Dakota Lekgoete, Acting spokesperson – ANC
Responding to corruption charges made against Nomvula Mokonyane, Lekgoete says the commission has not yet released its findings on the matter and she hasn’t yet appeared for cross-examination.
“I can’t speak on behalf of the commission and I am also not an administrator of law and justice. I respect the rule of law and I can’t interfere with the commission.”
