The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the Constitutional Council’s declaration of Mozambique’s official election results.
This comes amid renewed protests in Mozambique following the court’s confirmation of ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo as the winner of October’s contested presidential election.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ANC reiterated its respect for constitutional processes and underscored the need to uphold democracy in the Southern African region.
“As a long-standing ally and partner of the people of Mozambique, the ANC reaffirms its respect for the constitutional processes and institutions that safeguard democracy in our region,” said ANC national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri.
The ANC called on all political parties, stakeholders, and Mozambican citizens to respect the declared outcomes and focus on fostering national unity and development.
“This is a crucial moment to rise above divisions and work collectively to address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation,” Bhengu-Motsiri.
Emphasizing regional ties, the ANC highlighted the shared liberation struggle history between South Africa and Mozambique.
“Renewing and uniting the people of Mozambique, while strengthening the historic ties between Frelimo and the ANC, is of mutual benefit in promoting people-to-people relationships and fostering inclusive economic growth for the shared prosperity of both nations,” said Bhengu-Motsiri.
The ANC urged dialogue, mutual respect, and a commitment to the will of the people as essential pillars for political stability and sustainable development.
The ruling party also reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening South Africa’s ties with Mozambique’s newly elected leadership to foster regional integration, peace, and economic growth.
“The ANC remains committed to deepening these ties and working closely with Mozambique’s elected leadership to promote regional integration, economic development, and peace across our continent,” Bhengu-Motsiri added.
