The ANC’s Dada Morero has been elected as the new Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
The ANC has officially endorsed the Member of the Mayoral Committee on Finance, Morero, as the new Mayor of Johannesburg earlier on Tuesday at a press conference held at Luthuli House in the Johannesburg CBD.
This comes after Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda handed his resignation letter to the cSpeaker on Tuesday, after weeks of intense pressure amid allegations of incompetence.
The ANC’s regional secretary, Sasabona Manganye, sang praises of Morero, saying he would undoubtedly improve the city’s position.
The city is dealing with a water crisis, electricity disruptions (load reduction), and tight budgets.
“The people are happy because they know that one of the best of the best of the ANC, Morero, will take the leadership of the mayorship in the city.
“He will be able to inspire confidence in the residents and also ensure service delivery is accelerated because we don’t select anyone to fill in the space,” Manganye said.
However, the DA has called for the dissolution of the Council and a new election to enable voters to make a fresh start for the Joburg Metro.
DA Johannesburg Caucus Leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, said that currently, Johannesburg’s residents have to watch from the sidelines as service delivery continues to crumble.
“When a city can no longer deliver on basic services, the province is obliged to act. It will not help to put Johannesburg under the administration of an ANC-run province, so the only viable remedy is dissolution,” Echeozonjoku said.
