South Africa’s top all time goal scorer Benni McCarthy has been named as Kenya’s national team head coach.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) said on Monday that the former South African international would assume the position ahead of the country’s World Cup qualifying campaign that starts later this month.

The federation expressed confidence in McCarthy, saying the former Manchester United strikers’ coach would bring a wealth of experience, both as a coach and a player. McCarthy is the only South African to win the UEFA champions.

McCarthy will be joined by fellow South African veteran goalkeeper Moeneeb Joseph, who will be goalkeeper coach, and Vasili Manousakis who will be his assistant. Pilela Maposa has been hired as the performance analyst.

FKF president Hussein Mohammed said he was elated about the new appointments.

“After a rigorous selection process, we are confident that Benni McCarthy is the right person to lead our national team forward. His experience, vision and commitment to developing Kenyan football align perfectly with our ambitions.

“This team brings a wealth of expertise, and we believe they will instil tactical discipline, structure and a winning mentality as we prepare for upcoming competitions,” Mohammed said in a statement.

McCarthy said he was excited about his position at Harambee Stars.

“I am honoured to take on this role and excited about the journey ahead with the Kenyan national team. I have studied the talent in this country, and I believe there is immense potential to compete at the highest level.

“Together with my coaching team, including Vasili Manousakis, Moeneeb Josephs and Pilela Maposa, we are committed to building a structured, disciplined, and competitive squad.

“Our goal is to develop a strong team identity, play exciting football and make the nation proud. I look forward to working with the players, the federation and the passionate Kenyan fans to achieve success,” he said.

The federation said McCarthy and his team would take charge immediately as Kenya prepared for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon.

The quartet have signed a two-year contract.
