With a 30% tariff hike on South African imports to America looming, President Cyril Ramaphosa has spoken with US President Donald Trump.

The Presidency said on Thursday that the two leaders held a telephone discussion on bilateral trade matters on Wednesday morning.

“The two leaders undertook to continue with further engagements recognising the various trade negotiations the US is currently involved in. Respective trade negotiating teams will take forward more detailed discussions,” it said in a statement.

The tariff hikes will be implemented just after midnight. There are serious concerns over the impact it is going to have on jobs and businesses, specifically in the auto manufacturing and agriculture sectors.
