For the first time since the dawn of the democracy, the Budget Speech has been postponed.
According to insiders, there was a huge disagreement between the African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance ahead of the speech, which was meant to be delivered at 2pm. They are the senior partners in the Government of National Unity.
In a media alert, the Democratic Alliance said the Budget was postponed due to the DA’s opposition to the ANC’s increase on value added tax.
“The 2025/26 Budget Speech has been postponed following intense pressure against a proposed 2% VAT increase.
“The DA unequivocally rejected the ANC’s VAT hike plan. If included in the Budget, the DA was prepared to vote it down in Parliament,” the alert said.
It said the party would keep fighting to protect South Africans from higher taxes and fewer jobs.
The Budget Speech will be now be on 12 March.
