The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni has welcomed the arrest and court appearance of the seven individuals involved in a R36 million waste management scandal, that cost Ekurhuleni R9 million.

“Corruption has been a barrier to effective service delivery in the CoE (City of Ekurhuleni) and this case must serve as a warning to others who seek to abuse their positions for personal gain at the expense of residents.”

Pule Mabe, former MP and ANC treasurer-general, was among the seven suspects arrested for the alleged corruption. The tender was awarded to Enviro-Mobi in March 2017.

It was for the supply of 200 Tuk-Tuks for waste pickers in Ekurhuleni. The majority of which were defective.

Following the arrest and court appearance, Mabe has announced his decision to step down from the ANCs national executive committee, but “not because he is guilty”.

“Corruption of this nature not only deprives the residents of Ekurhuleni of essential services, but also erodes public trust in local government,” Kotzé said.

The DA has called for transparency and accountability in public procurement processes and has pleased to see justice being served through the efforts of the Special Investigating Unit and the National Prosecuting Authority.

“We ensure this matter will receive the attention it deserves at the Municipal Public Accounts Committee”.
