A Democratic Alliance (DA) KwaZulu-Natal councilor has been arrested and is facing murder and arson charges in connection with the deaths of his wife, their two daughters and a son who died when their Bergville home caught fire.
The unnamed councilor, from the Okhahlamba Local Municipality, will appear in the Bergville Magistrates Court on Tuesday, following his arrest in Ladysmith on Monday.
The councilor sustained severe burns but was the only survivor when his house was engulfed by a massive blaze in an alleged arson attack in October.
The party’s KZN leader, Francois Rodgers said they are shocked by the arrest but should he be proven guilty, then he must face the full might of the law.
“From a party perspective, the province will also be notifying the chairperson of the federal legal commission that the internal process will now be followed by the federal legal commission.”
