The Eastern Cape Democratic Alliance has warned that recent spate of abductions along the Wild Coast could have devastating effects for tourism in the region.

The area relies heavily on the sector for its economic growth.

The party’s spokesperson of economic development, environmental affairs and tourism, Leander Kruger, has called on Premier Oscar Mabuyane to take decisive steps to curb abductions in the area.

“This alarming trend not only endangers lives but also poses a severe threat to the region’s tourism industry, which is vital for local economies and livelihoods,” she said.

Leander said the recent abduction of Alize van der Merwe, who was driving from the East London airport along the Wild Coast when she was abducted, has brought this crisis into stark reality.

According to reports, Van der Merwe landed in East London on Friday and was travelling to Umngasi Resort in Port St Johns along the N2 when she was abducted.

The Hawks reportedly confirmed that a ransom demand had been made to her parents by her captors.

She has reportedly not been rescued yet.

Kruger in a statement that tourism was the cornerstone of the Wild Coast’s economy, drawing visitors with its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage and unique experiences.

“However, the fear of violence and insecurity has deterred potential travelers, leading to decreased bookings and financial losses for local businesses.

“If left unaddressed, these incidents could have long-lasting repercussions on the region’s economic stability, a region still reeling from the after-effects of Covid,” said Kruger

Kruger urged the Mabuyane to take immediate and decisive action to combat this crisis.

Some of Kruger’s suggestions included an enhanced security presence, rapid response units, public awareness campaigns, community engagement and investing in tourism promotion.

Kruger said addressing these issues was essential not only for restoring confidence in the Wild Coast as a safe travel destination, but also for ensuring the wellbeing of its residents.

Kruger added that the premier must prioritise the safety of communities and the sustainability of our tourism sector to reclaim the Wild Coast as a secure and welcoming destination for all.
