Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo has been reinstated as head of Crime Intelligence.

Khumalo was reinstated on Thursday morning, after being temporarily removed from his post in late June following his arrest on fraud and corruption charges.

He was arrested by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), alongside six co-accused colleagues, for allegedly manipulating appointments within Crime Intelligence.

At the centre of the case is the controversial hiring of Dineo Mokwele, a 30‑year‑old with no policing background, for a senior executive role.

The group faces allegations of fraud, corruption, and misuse of intelligence funds.

His arrest, combined with his former leadership role in the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), has made him a pivotal figure in the ongoing Madlanga Commission, chaired by retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.

In his testimony before the commission, Khumalo spoke of the gains made by the task team, and questioned why an attempt was made by since-suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu to disband it.

He also told the commission that some of the most serious threats to police operations came from inside SAPS and the criminal justice system, allowing external criminal networks to penetrate and neutralise investigations.

He alleged syndicates recruited serving police officers, prosecutors and other justice officials as “insiders” to leak information, derail dockets, influence bail outcomes, and protect cartel leaders from prosecution.
