EFF Commander-In-Chief Julius Malema is leading the party’s voter registration programme in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.
Spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said Malema was expected to lead the drive in Verulam, Chatsworth and Lamontville on Saturday, and will conclude with visits to Clermont, KwaMashu C section and Engonyameni on Sunday.
The party seems to have identified the province as one of its focal points, to boost its poor performance after the 2019 elections, with the Red Berets previously gaining a 9.7% of the vote and finishing fourth behind the ANC, IFP and DA.
“Voter Registration is a critical opportunity for all those who seek to enforce change in our country to go out in their numbers and form part of the most decisive elections in South Africa, since 1994,” Thambo said.
The party urged young people to seize this opportunity and register to vote, in order to ensure change within the province and the country as a whole.
On Thursday, the IEC confirmed that in addition to Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, KZN is one of the provinces with the highest number of voter registrations contributing to 15 million out of the 27 million voters registered thus far.
The commission’s CEO, Sy Mamabolo, said that the commission has been working with disaster management and infrastructure task teams in order to ensure an operational condition of utilities, following the recent floods in the province.
