Eskom announced on Wednesday that am employee at its Koeberg Power Station, 30 km north of Cape Town, has tested positive for COVID-19.
In a statement issued on by Eskom, the power utility said the employee went to the doctor after feeling unwell and following the check-up, he reported to his manager that he had contracted the novel coronavirus and would be in isolation for 14 days.
This comes during the first week of level 4 of the lockdown, where President Cyril Ramaphosa has allowed for companies to gradually open to allow for economic activity.
“Eskom observed all the protocols for dealing with the pandemic and immediately contacted all those employees who were in contact with him. They have all since been placed under precautionary isolation,” said Eskom.
It is not clear where the employee contracted the virus.
However, the parastatal said of the seven employees who had been in contact with him, six of them received their results came back negative.
Companies have been instructed by the government to ensure that the workplaces are safe and healthy environment for workers.
“We welcome any independent review of the incident by both the department of labour or health”, said Eskom.
