The Stock family has issued a statement following the death of Warrick “DJ Warras” Stock, a South African media personality, activist, and businessman.

The 40-year-old was shot and killed on Tuesday afternoon outside a high-rise building near the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

DJ Warras was declared dead at the scene, and forensic investigators continued combing the area late into the evening.

“With indescribable heartbreak, deep sorrow, and overwhelming shock,” the family wrote, “we learned yesterday of the tragic and untimely passing of our beloved Warrick”.

The statement said he was a devoted son, a proud father of three, a cherished brother and uncle, the heart and anchor of his family.

Affectionately known as “The Shady Lurker,” he brought light and laughter into every space he occupied, according to social media users.

In recent months, Warras had positioned himself as a digital watchdog, using his platform to challenge crime and corruption.

His commentary on high-profile cases, including that of controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, earned him both admiration and criticism.

His death has sparked widespread mourning across social media, with tributes pouring in from fans, fellow broadcasters, and public figures.

“As we begin the painful journey of mourning,” the family wrote, “we humbly ask for privacy, compassion, and understanding during this unimaginably difficult time”.

They have also asked that the South African Police Service be given the space and support needed to conduct a thorough investigation.

The family has not yet appointed a spokesperson.

Details of memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared in due course, said the family.

They asked to be kept in the nation’s thoughts and prayers not as a trending topic, but as a family in mourning.
