Five suspected bank robbers were shot and killed in a shootout with law enforcement agencies on the N14 Ventersdorp highway on Monday and a woman was also arrested on the scene, police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said.
Mogale said police had received a tip-off about suspects in two vehicles who were planning to commit a robbery in or near Carletonville and an integrated team led by the police spotted the vehicles, a Toyota and VW Polo, driving around various banks.
She said as they left the Carletonville area, the team tactically proceeded to try and stop the suspects. When they realised what was happening, they opened fire on the law enforcement team that also included private security and Gauteng traffic authorities.
“In the ensuing shootout, five of the suspects (aged) between 25 and 35 were fatally wounded, and a female suspect was arrested,” Mogale said, adding that the suspects’ vehicles were “positively linked” to three cases in Groblersdal, Secunda and Hercules.
