The match took place in Soweto, Orlando Stadium.

The aggregate score was tied at 3-3, and the match went to penalties to decide the winner.

The Buccaneers fought valiantly, with Masindi Nemtajela scoring the opening goal in the 39th minute.

Yanela Mbuthuma doubled the lead in the 67th minute with a header from a corner kick by Kabelo Dlamini.

However, it was Oswin Appollis who stole the show with a stoppage-time goal, beating the Lupopo goalkeeper to make it 3-0 and sending the match to penalties.

There were no goals during 30 minutes of extra time.

The penalty shootout was a nail-biting affair, with both teams scoring crucial penalties.

However, it was Lupopo who held their nerve, winning 5-4.

Yanela Mbuthuma missed the penalty in the final round which sealed the fate for Pirates.

“We can’t blame the players,” said Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

“The best team today didn’t go through to the group stages of the Champions League. We congratulate the opponent; they used their weapons. But the best team did not go through to the next stage of the CAF Champions League.”

The loss marked a disappointing end to Pirates’ CAF Champions League campaign, despite their gallant efforts.

Ouaddou, said the team will now focus on their domestic league and cup competitions.
