The Gauteng e-government department has installed 193 new CCTV cameras in townships, informal settlements and hostels.
The expansion builds on the success of the first two phases, which saw 300 cameras deployed in vulnerable areas of Gauteng.
With the current fiscal year coming to an end, the department intends to install another 100 cameras, further strengthening security throughout the province.
“The expansion of CCTV surveillance in our townships and informal settlements is a key part of ensuring a safer Gauteng. We remain committed to improving the lives of our people through strategic technology solutions, and these security measures are essential to achieving that goal,” said Gauteng e-government MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini said in a statement.
The department’s partnership with Vumacam has led to an accelerated deployment of cameras. To date, it has been given access to 6299 cameras out of the 6,399 targeted.
Alongside its focus on security, the department has also made strides in information and communications technology (ICT) skills development.
It said that by the end of third quarter of the current financial year, 4281 individuals had benefited from various ICT training programmes, well beyond the target of 3,500.
This success was largely attributed to strategic partnerships with ICT institutions, including Microsoft, which have expanded the reach and scope of the programme.
