Department of Trade, Industry and Competition Deputy Minster Zuko Godlimpi is attending the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Public Forum in Switzerland this week to discuss how re- globalisation can benefit more people.

The theme of this year’s forum is “Re-globalisation: Better Trade for a Better World”. It will explore how re-globalisation can help make trade more inclusive.

The WTO advocates for re-globalisation, which it says is aimed at increasing international cooperation and broadening integration.

There will be around 140 interactive sessions organised by the WTO Secretariat and various stakeholders. The sub-themes include green policies to maximise the benefits of trade, services trade to build progress and enhance welfare and digitalisation as a catalyst for inclusive trade.

According to the department, the themes are in sync with the priorities it has embraced in pursuit of industrialisation, reindustrialisation and economic transformation.

They are also relevant to the priorities of the African continent as defined by the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Godlimpi’s programme includes engagements with key WTO members and courtesy calls to the heads of the WTO, the United Nations Trade and Development, the International Trade Centre, the World Intellectual Property Organisation and The South Centre, which is an intergovernmental organisation of developing nations.

The meeting ends on Friday.
