In a move to strengthen the National Treasury, Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana has welcomed the appointment of three new deputy directors-general (DDGs).

The appointments were officially announced by Cabinet.

Godongwana believes that the appointments mark a major step forward in the department’s efforts to balance stability with innovation and bring in new ideas while maintaining consistency.

“It is essential that the department demonstrates strong leadership and stability while continuing to develop a pipeline of talented and dedicated public service professionals committed to serving our nation,” he said.

The three new DDGs are Ulrike Britton, Ogalaletseng Gaarekwe and Christopher Axelson.

Britton will serve as DDG for public finance, leveraging her decade-long experience in the department.

Gaarekwe will lead intergovernmental relations, building on her experience as acting DDG and her time in the Free State Treasury.

Lastly, Axelson will oversee tax and financial sector policy, drawing from his private banking sector experience and previous roles within the Treasury.

“These appointments reflect our ongoing investment in building capacity and ensuring continuity in our critical work,” Godongwana said.

The new appointees are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the department’s future direction and ensuring continuity in its critical work.

With their combined experience and expertise, the department believes they are well-positioned to drive the National Treasury forward and address complex financial challenges facing the nation.
