THE Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, has announced the appointment of Dan Marokane as the new group CEO of Eskom.

Marokane is a qualified chemical engineer who has an MBA from UCT and a seasoned executive with more than 20 years senior leadership experience.

The position was left open after the departure of the former executive Andre de Ruyter earlier this year, with Callib Cassim appointed as the acting CEO.

The minister’s office said the exact date of commencement will be announced once Marokane has concluded the handover process with his current employer, but is expected to take up the position by no later than the end of March next year.

The office said that Marokane has experience working in distressed organisations with visible and pressured turnaround mandates, citing his recent assignment at Tongaat-Hulett where he stepped up to lead the financially distressed business when its group chief executive resigned.

Marokane was one of four senior managers suspended during the state capture period, subsequently resigned and went into the private sector.

The public enterprises office confirmed that mandatory checks, which included criminal and credit checks, verification of identity, qualifications, directorships and establishment of possible conflicts of interest were conducted.

Gordhan also announced the appointment of CEO of state-owned forestry company, Safcol, Tsepo Monaheng as the new group CEO of State arms manufacturer Denel.
