South Africans are celebrating Heritage Day on Tuesday, with a number of events planned across the country.

This year, Deputy President Paul Mashatile will be delivering government’s keynote address in Ficksburg in the Free State. The theme for Heritage Month is “Celebrating the lives of our heroes and heroines who laid down their lives for our freedom”.

It pays tribute to the many struggle stalwarts who gave their lives for South Africa’s freedom and shines the spotlight on the country’s liberation movement, which received various forms of solidarity and support from neighbouring countries.

Hundreds of people will gather to celebrate the roles played by these brave men and women.

Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth together with her deputy, Phumzile Mgcina, are participating in a week-long progamme to mark Heritage Month, while Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube will address an event focusing on mother-tongue literacy under the theme “Language, Our Heritage Family Day” celebration at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg

The Sport, Arts and Culture Department is hosting the Indigenous Games Festival from Tuesday to Thursday in Mangaung, where young people will compete in various indigenous games such as kho-kho and Diketo.

Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities cross the country have called on citizens to prioritise safety as the nation celebrates the day.

“As we come together to celebrate our cultures, traditions and diversity on Heritage Day, it is important to do so responsibly,” said Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane.

“Every year, people come together from different parts to celebrate what makes us all uniquely South African. We encourage all citizens to do so responsibly and avoid taking part in unlawful activities such as public drinking, reckless and negligent driving amongst other things.”

Maremane said the GTP together with the Gauteng traffic wardens and other law enforcement agencies would be on high alert to ensure safety on the roads and in communities.

“We will continue to conduct law enforcement operations to address crime and lawlessness,” he warned.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, who normally gives the keynote address, is in New York this year for a United Nations General Assembly meeting. He used his weekly newsletter on Monday to praise South Africa’s diverse cultures.
