The Executive Director of the Elexions Agency Bontle Mpakanyane announced candidates for the positions of officials for the ANCWL 13th National Conference on Saturday night.
Branch nomination for the position of league president showed Deputy Minister in the Presidency Sisisi Tolashe leading with 1564, followed by ANC MP Thembeka Mchunu (796 ), and former league President Bathabile Dlamini on 258.
The late Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson received the most branch nominations for ANCWL Deputy President at 1 061 followed by Lungi Gcabashe (325) and former Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela (230) who declined nominations.
Both Berenice Swarts (64), and Sylvia Lucas ( 11) were added to the ballot following a number of candidates who declined nominations.
ANCWL Convener Baleka Mbete said the nomination of Joemat-Pettersson was an important milestone in that for the first time, she would have made history at the conference by becoming the first non-black member to be elected as the League’s Deputy President.
Mbete asked the conference to observe a moment of silence in memory of both Joemat-Pettersson and the late ANC DSG Jessie Duarte.
For the Secretary-General position, Nokuthula Nqaba secured the most branch nominations with 1v218, followed by Lydia Zitha (1v095), and Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe (228). And for the Deputy SG Makoma Makhurupetje scored 1091 nominations while Lungi Gcabashe received 559 but declined nomination.
Johanna Aphiri received 453 branch nominations for deputy secretary-general position but declined.
Winnie Ngwenya got 233 branch nominations, and former Communications Minister Dina Pule was nominated from the conference floor and received enough support to stand for the position of Deputy SG.
For Treasurer-General position MaQueen Letshoha-Mathae received 2155 branch nominations, and Manketsi Tlhape got 240.
A total of 2 885 branches submitted nominations for the 13th ANCWL National Conference with 2760 branches qualified to participate in the conference.
There are 3065 eligible voters.
Results for the office bearers are expected on Sunday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is also expected to close the 13th ANCWL National conference.
