A new social housing project that revolutionise affordable living in Johannesburg will be launched on Friday.

According to the municipality, this groundbreaking initiative is set to mark a remarkable milestone in addressing the critical need for affordable housing in Johannesburg.

The official launch of the Johannesburg Social Housing Company’s (Joscho) Ridge on Abel Street Social Housing Project will be attended by mayor Dada Morero, human settlements MMC Mlungisi Mabaso in Berea.

The city mentioned that the event would include the symbolic handover of keys to tenants.

“The cutting-edge 12-story building is specifically designed to cater to individuals entering the job market, including young professionals, recent graduates, and self-employed individuals,” the City of Joburg said in a statement.

The project features 155 rental residential units, comprising 144 bachelor apartments and 11 one-bedroom units, with rental prices ranging from R1100 to R1900, making it an affordable housing solution for many in the inner city.

The Ridge on Abel Street has 24-hour CCTV surveillance for enhanced safety and security, biometric access for convenient and secure entry,  parking and two elevators.

“This project is a testament to Joscho’s dedication to providing dignified living spaces for low-income individuals and families, thereby bridging the gap in the housing market,” the city said.

“This is a building step towards inner-city rejuvenation in an effort to address the housing needs of Johannesburg communities, and the launch of the Ridge on Abel Street solidifies this endeavour.”
