CITY of Joburg mayor Geoff Makhubo has passed away from COVID-19 complications, according to Eunice Mgcina, acting mayor and MMC for health and social development.
On July 3, the city said Makhubo, 53, had been hospitalised with Covid-19 complications.
He tested positive for COVID-19 in late June.
“We had hoped that the Executive mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods. Sadly, it was not to be,” said Mgcina.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother and the rest of his family, friends and comrades.”
Makhubo was elected mayor in 2019.
Makhubo was previously elected as the Co-President of the Metropolis Global Fund for Cities’ Development (FMDV).
At the time of his death, Makhubo was chairperson of the African National Congress in the Greater Johannesburg Region and was previously the Regional Treasurer and in his youth, the Chairperson of the ANC Youth League in the Region.
Lebogang Maile, Gauteng MEC for Human settlements, urban planning and COGTA, has paid tribute to Makhubo, saying his death was a huge blow to the city and the ANC.
“On behalf of the Gauteng provincial government we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Makhubo family; his colleagues in Exco and his organisation, the African National Congress, said Maile.
“We are saddened about mayor Makhubo’s death. This is a huge blow for local government not only in Johannesburg, but provincially as a whole. He was very disciplined and committed servant, who was dedicated to the service of the people.”
Former Joburg mayor, Herman Mashaba, said he was shocked to hear of the passing of Makhubo.
“In these difficult times, we are reminded of how fragile life can be. Our shared humanity will always come before our politics. My thoughts and prayers go to his family, friends, and colleagues in the city,” said Mashaba.
Meanwhile, Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina is currently in self-isolation at home after receiving his test results on Wednesday.
“Executive Mayor Masina undertook to take a Covid-19 test after experiencing mild symptoms yesterday,” according to the city.
“The executive mayor is in high spirits and is expected to make a speedy recovery. The appointment of an acting mayor will be announced in due course. All persons who were in contact with the executive mayor have been advised to self-isolate and test if necessary.”
Masina called on the public to continue adhering to adjusted Level 4 lockdown regulations and practice non-pharmaceutical interventions.
