Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has confirmed that Patriotic Alliance deputy president Kenny Kunene has been reinstated as Johannesburg’s Mayoral Committee Member of Transport.

The City of Johannesburg has confirmed the reappointment of Kunene, effective immediately.

Kunene has previously held the Transport MMC post and is known for his outspoken style and unconventional approach to governance.

His reappointment comes at a time when coalition dynamics in Johannesburg remain fragile, with the multi-party government relying on support from smaller parties such as the PA to maintain control. This includes controversy between the ANC and PA, with threats to collapse the Government of National Unity.

Kunene’s leave and reappointment traces back to July 2025, when the Hawks raided the Sandton home of businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe, accused of murder and organised crime. Kunene was at the house at the time.

He was then suspended by the PA pending an investigation but later cleared of any wrongdoing.

The timing of Kunene’s reappointment follows threats by PA leader Gayton McKenzie, who said the PA would withdraw from coalition governments across the country if Kunene was not reinstated, and cited dissatisfaction with how his party was being treated by its partners.
