KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has met with a group of unemployed social workers who had picketed outside the Premier’s office in Pietermaritzburg, KZN and after listening to their grievances, he acknowledged that their skills are crucial in the Department of Social Development.
Ntuli assured the group that he will take their concerns into consideration, but the social workers vowed to protest until their demands are met.
KZN reported that since 2013 the number of unemployed has been over 2 600.
The strikers believe that their skills are crucial and are needed in several departments including the Department of Education and Health.
They also claimed that even though they are qualified and meet the minimum requirements for the job, their provincial department of social development does not give them job opportunities.
Ntuli said “the provincial government will communicate with the National Treasury in order to find the solution”.
However, Ntuli does not promise social workers jobs but alternatives that can be taken to resolve the issue, he said.
“The provincial governance is actively exploring ways to create opportunities and integrate these skilled individuals into the workforce, ensuring that their talents and dedication are utilised for the betterment of the province”, said Ntuli.
