Sanco in KwaZulu-Natal has officially expelled former President Jacob Zuma as its provincial chairperson and replaced him with his deputy Lawrence Dube, who will now hold the fort and keep the fires burning.

The decision to expel Zuma was announced by Sanco’s KZN secretary Sizwe Cele, on Friday in Durban.

This decision to expel Zuma was sparked by Zuma’s recent move from the ANC by throwing his weight behind the newly formed MK Party, saying he won’t campaign or vote for the ANC during the upcoming general elections.

Sanco has taken a U-turn from its initial stance where it had said Zuma’s decision to distance himself from the ANC wouldn’t impact his position at Sanco.

Cele said that Zuma violated the organisation’s constitution by failing to attend any of its last three meetings and his failure to submit any written or verbal apology to the provincial secretary.

“Such misconduct is classified as an abscondment of the office. The PEC resolved to remove him from the office of the provincial office of Sanco KwaZulu-Natal. The latest communication and decision has been set,” Cele said.

Cele said that the provincial PEC was therefore left with no other option but to consider Zuma’s behaviour as misconduct.

In the previous by-election in uPhongolo in Zululand, the MK party made an impact on the established parties, and it has now shown that it can not only take votes away from the IFP and EFF but the ANC as well.

The next by-election will be on 28 February when the ANC defends a seat in Govan Mbeki, Mpumalanga, with the party expected to make its Mpumalanga debut here.

On Saturday, Zuma will address supporters at Phuthaditjhaba Multipurpose Hall in Qwaqwa in the Free State province.
