Iconic anti-apartheid photographer Dr. Peter Magubane has passed away at 91, mere days before his 92nd birthday.
Born in 1932, the veteran South African photographer played a crucial role in documenting the apartheid era, using his lens to expose the harsh realities of racial segregation.
His indomitable spirit, courage, and exceptional contributions to journalism have left an indelible mark on the nation, a statement released by his family noted.
Magubane rose to prominence through his coverage of pivotal political events, notably the 1976 June 16 student uprisings. His powerful images earned him international acclaim, numerous awards, and recognition for his fearless storytelling.
Magubane’s commitment to telling the truth came at a price. He faced persecution, including arrest and 586 days in solitary confinement. Undeterred, he continued to expose injustice, using his camera as both a shield and a sword.
One of his iconic images was taken in 1956 – on a drive through a Johannesburg suburb, Magubane captured a symbol of segregation – a girl on a bench with a sign reading ‘Europeans only’. Despite the risks, he published the photograph worldwide, a stark reminder of apartheid’s grip.
Enduring arrests and abuse, including 586 days in solitary confinement, Magubane remained resolute. Upon release in 1975, he faced a five-year photography ban but defied it during the 1976 Soweto uprising.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwof said Magubane was an excellent photojournalist and freedom fighter who fearlessly documented apartheid’s injustices “Dr Magubane used his camera as a mode of protest, never backing down against an oppressive regime.”
“As we celebrate 30 years of South Africa’s freedom this year, it is important to remember and celebrate the role Dr Magubane played in our freedom. South Africa is a free and democratic country today because of the role played by Dr Magubane and many others who fought for our freedom. This legacy must live on, ” he said.
“My thoughts and prayers go to Dr Magubane’s family, friends, and contemporaries. Dr Magubane’s passing is a significant loss to the country” he added
