Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi promises to install 41 electricity transformers over the next three weeks in Kagiso and in Orange Farm as part of the Gauteng Energy Response Plan to deal with energy challenges in the province.
Dubbed the Transformer Replacement Program, it aims to replace and install transformers in Gauteng communities in need and struggling with energy supply as a result of dire infrastructure, illegal connections, and non-paying customers.
Lesufi said Soweto, Orange Farm, and Kagiso are the hardest hit by the electricity crisis and he begged the residents not to damage or steal the new transformers while speaking in Kagiso on Tuesday.
“While electricity is not directly controlled by our Provincial Government, we are committed to supporting communities in need by installing and replacing transformers.
“We know how painful it is to need electricity, people go as far as turning their fridges into book storage. The electricity crisis is a huge problem in Gauteng, affecting areas such as Orange Farm, Kagiso, and Dobsonville.
“Not having electricity is not pleasant. Therefore, we are going to install big transformers so that there are no power glitches. We are going to deploy law enforcement agencies when installing these transformers so that these transformers do not get stolen. There will be strict security arrangements to ensure that those transformers are safe,” said Lesufi.
